The College Essentials Checklist: What to Bring, Buy, and Sort Out

·

2 min read

There is no single list of things every student needs for college. Check your accommodation, course, and institution’s instructions before buying anything, especially bulky items or specialist equipment.

Before you go

  • Confirm your course start date and first week schedule.

  • Check where you need to be and how to get there.

  • Save important contact details.

  • Check your accommodation inventory, if applicable.

  • Review course specific equipment or reading requirements.

  • Make a basic budget for travel, food, and supplies.

Study basics

  • Laptop or other device required for your course

  • Charger and any essential adaptors

  • Notebook or digital note taking option

  • Pens and highlighters, if you use them

  • Headphones for focused study

  • Bag suitable for your commute

  • Calendar or planner, paper or digital

If you are moving into accommodation

Check what is already provided before packing or buying:

  • Bedding

  • Towels

  • Toiletries

  • Laundry bag and detergent

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Basic kitchen items, if needed

  • Personal medication and care items

Do not forget the practical details

  • Know how to access your student account and course information.

  • Check your travel arrangements and backup routes.

  • Keep essential documents somewhere secure.

  • Find out where to go if you need academic or personal support.

Tip: Start with what you will need in your first week. You can add items later, once you know what your course and accommodation actually require.
